Star Valley High School and Star Valley Middle School differ in many ways, but they now one thing in common.
English teacher Mr. Kalin Schwab recently moved from the middle school to the high school, and he noticed the differences between the two schools right away. “Maturity. Students are more mature at the high school. They are also better able to solve simple problems on their own. I had to spend 2 weeks teaching middle school students how to turn in assignments on Canvas.”
Although Schwab appreciates the maturity of his new high school students, he misses the enthusiasm of his younger wards. “Middle schoolers are still excited about school and enjoy activities. There is still some of that excitement in high school, but I would say some have become cynical toward school, and it is harder to get them excited.”
SVHS has many traditions and none bigger than homecoming week and Schwab appreciates school spirit when it comes to football games and SVHS athletics. He notes that the level of participation at the high school exceeds that of his old school.
The difference in spirit became most prominent during homecoming week’s many dress up days. One such day, Star Wars, was in support of Ben Hepworth, Mr. Hepworth’s son.
Junior Hayden Morgan dressed up like Obi Wan Kenobi. “Me and my friends felt the force, and we also wanted to help out Ben,” said Morgan.
Maturity and school spirt are not the only things that separate the middle and high schools but they become obvious during spirit weeks and in the classroom.
