CURLS ON FIRE: During 6th hour weights, junior Hallie Robertson uses a dumbbell to complete a set of curls. Currently, 31 girls are participating in this trimester’s two classes. “Curls really help to define your biceps,” explained Robertson.

The school year started with several modifications to the schedule and student life. One of those was a new weights class for women only.

Many female students have felt uncomfortable lifting weights in a class full of boys, especially when they had very little experience in the weightlifting world.

Today’s women have become more empowered to start going to the gym; consequently, weightlifting is not just left to the boys, now many women have become fitness influencers. It is more socially acceptable for girls to be muscular, unlike years ago when every girl wanted to look practically anorexic.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for girls to work out without the guys around because some girls don’t like having guys with them in the weight room when they are working out,” said weights teacher Eddie Clark.

Enough girls signed up for the course that counselors created two sections. Adding the class has tremendously raised participation in female students lifting weights. The atmosphere in the class is fun and upbeat with a different level of comfortability. “We have a lot of girls taking the weight’s class that we didn’t have before, and they are really enjoying it and really getting to experience things that they wouldn’t have before,” said Clark.

The class gives young women the chance to learn about fitness and muscle growth. Junior Hallie Robertson said, “I think it’s good for women to be muscular and to be strong.”

Most girls probably feel insecure in the weight room, especially with a bunch of boys looking on. This class gives them the opportunity to learn the basics and become the fittest version of themselves.
