Students from Star Valley High School’s FFA chapter traveled to Cheyenne, Wyoming, April 9–11 to compete in the annual state FFA convention, an event hosted by the National FFA Organization. The convention brought together FFA members from across the state to compete in agricultural events, attend leadership sessions, and connect with other students.
The trip to the state is something students must earn. Members first compete at the district level, and those who place high enough qualify to move on to the state competition. This year, SVHS students participated in a variety of events, including livestock evaluation, agricultural mechanics, agronomy, veterinary science, sales, extemporaneous speaking, and horse judging.
For many students, the experience goes beyond just competition. “State is a week full of experiences, and you learn new skills,” said Haylee Deroche, an FFA member who competed in horse judging. “You get the highest score to qualify for nationals—just take a deep breath and enjoy the ride.”
While the days can be long and demanding, students say the friendships make it worth it. “My favorite part was being with my friends and making jokes, because that makes the long competition days easier,” Deroche added.
Gracie Jackson, another SVHS FFA member, explained that the event is more than just contests. “It’s a statewide competition and convention where students win awards and attend leadership sessions,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for people to try something new and step out of their comfort zones.”
Jackson also emphasized the personal growth that comes with being in FFA. “FFA has helped me grow as a leader and as a person. I’ve made amazing memories and met some really great people through it.”
The Wyoming State FFA Convention continues to be an important experience for students interested in agriculture, leadership, and personal development. For SVHS members, it’s not just about competing, it’s about learning, growing, and representing their school at the state level.
