Playing one sport can take dedication, but for many student athletes at SVHS, the commitment doesn’t stop there. Multi-sport athletes balance practices, workouts, and games throughout the entire school year, putting in extra time to stay competitive across different seasons.
Many of these athletes begin preparing months before their seasons even start. Sophomore Kate Gaskell, who participates in three sports, spends much of her summer getting ready. “I go to all the volleyball weights in the summer to prepare,” Gaskell said. She believes staying active year-round gives her an advantage. “Having three sports helps me stay in shape all year.”
That same dedication continues during the school year. Multi-sport athletes often attend extra workouts and find additional time to improve their skills. Senior Zack Thompson, another student athlete, uses early mornings to build strength. “Going to the “0 hour” weight training helps a lot with making me stronger for football and basketball,” Thompson said. He also practices outside of scheduled team time. “I like to shoot around a lot in the summer too, to help with my accuracy in basketball.”
The effort doesn’t stop when practice ends. Many athletes stay late or come early to refine specific skills. Junior Avery England focuses on improving her shooting after team practices. “I usually stay after practice in basketball to help improve my shot,” England said. She also emphasized the importance of offseason preparation. “I also spend a lot of time in the summer to prepare.”
Balancing multiple sports requires discipline and time management, but these athletes say the work is worth it. By training throughout the year and committing to extra workouts, multi-sport athletes at SVHS continue to improve their skills and contribute to their teams across every season.
