The spring high school rodeo season officially began last weekend, with students from SVHS traveling to Pocatello, Idaho, to compete on April 24–25. The event brought together young rodeo athletes from across the region, all eager to test their skills and start the season strong.
High school rodeo gives students the opportunity to compete in events like team roping, barrel racing, pole bending, and breakaway roping. For many participants, it’s more than just competition. It’s a chance to connect with others who share their passion for the sport.
Junior Ross Hilton had a standout weekend. “Last week’s rodeo went really well. Me and my team roping partner, Kruz Smith, were able to win the team roping Friday and Saturday,” he said. Hilton and Smith, a student from Idaho, got a time of 6.2 seconds at Friday’s rodeo and a time of 5.5 seconds at Saturday’s rodeo.
Other students also had strong performances. Senior Arie Kilroy, who competes in barrels, poles, and breakaway, shared her success from the weekend. “This last weekend went really well for the first rodeo back. I got 6th in barrels and 10th in poles,” she said. Kilroy also explained what draws her to the sport: “The reason I started competing is because I love all the people and the sport itself.”
For some, the weekend was about more than just results. Senior Gracie Jackson, who competes in breakaway roping, reflected positively despite challenges, explaining that even though her performance wasn’t what she had hoped for, her horse performed well and she still enjoyed the experience. Looking ahead, Jackson added, “I’m most excited to make more memories with my friends and work towards catching more of my calves.”
Despite different outcomes, these student cowboys and cowgirls showed determination, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm throughout the weekend. As the rodeo season continues, these athletes are looking forward to improving their skills, competing at future events, and representing their school.
The strong start in Pocatello sets a promising tone for the rest of the spring rodeo season.
