RISE UP: Will Linford goes up for a shot over Big Country Lawson during practice. Six varsity players will return this season for the Braves. “Will bricked it off the backboard because I am a hall of fame intimidator,” said Lawson.

The first ever basketball practice involved some wire to serve as backboards, a peach basket and a ladder to retrieve made baskets. We have come a long way since then.

Basketball tryouts started on November 20-22, but the teams will not play just yet. The Braves must complete 10 full practices, as per state requirements, before their first game at the Riverton tournament.

Boys head coach Matt Shumway and the girls head coach Kade Erciskon are both excited for he coming season. “Of course, the games…those are always fun. But I’m also looking forward to seeing the progression of our teams from start to finish of the season and their growth throughout the season,” said Shumway.

Erickson also looks forward to seeing his players grow. “The opportunity to work with the girls and to see what we can accomplish. It has been a great start, and we hope to continue the energy at practices,” said Erickson.

The Braves’ teams will consist of 11 freshmen, 12 sophomores, six juniors, and four seniors. The Lady Braves will also have 11 freshmen but kept 8 sophomores, five juniors, and six seniors.

The Braves and Lady Braves both play Central as their first game on December 7th at 4:00 and 5:30pm. Are they ready? What are they doing to prepare?

Senior Kash Lancaster said, “We are putting in a new offense and defense to be able to play at a higher level. We should get everything sorted out to compete with Central within the next couple of weeks.”

Senior Delancy Brog said, “ Yeah, I think we are prepared. We are working on running our offense a little quicker and being able to score more in our games.”

The teams are practicing hard to compete well during the coming season. Tune into SVI media to watch and support the Braves and Lady Braves as they start their season in Riverton.
