The Star Valley Braves varsity cross country team had the opportunity to travel to Tillamook, Oregon, from September 18 through 22 for The Mook at Adlerbrook XC meet. Energy was high throughout the team as runners were anxious to compete. They were also able to enjoy a fun-filled weekend.
Tillamook, Oregon, is home to the cheesemakers and the world-famous Tillamook Creamery. The team toured the facility and visited the Sturgeon Fish Hatchery and the beach. “I got to see the ocean for the first time. It was so exciting! I liked throwing the jellyfish leftovers at my team, lol,” said Carlee Angel.
Coach Draney was excited about the idea of taking his team to Oregon this season. Through hard work fundraising and donations from the community, he was able to make it happen. “We were so fortunate to be able to go on this trip, but we couldn’t have done it without the support of our amazing coach and others who made it possible,” said Brigham Hahn, boys’ team captain.
During the long 13-hour drive to Oregon, the team created lasting memories and lifelong friendships. Emery Kennington described the trip as “feeling like one big family vacation.” One of the cross country team’s mantras is “Ohana” (meaning family). Each individual got to experience what it really means to be each other’s brothers and sisters, building the team’s unbreakable bond.
In addition to these milestones, Colton Cranney had a remarkable race. He crossed the finish line at 14 minutes and 50 seconds. Dahl Erickson from SVI Media wrote, “Fastest time ever for a Wyoming runner, as I understand it. Even faster than Jase Burton and Peter Visser, two recent SVHS grads,” meaning that Cranney set the new school record for the 5K.
Cranney said, “It feels incredible to set a new record for Star Valley. All the hard work and miles paid off, and I’m proud to represent my team and community in such a big way.”
From ocean views to record-breaking runs, the Braves’ journey to Oregon was unforgettable. The weekend reminded the team what Ohana truly means—family, resilience, and chasing greatness together.
