Over the course of two weeks, chess masters Palmer Andrew, Evelyn Mavy, Gusher Hepworth and Ryder Wolfley went toe-to-toe in the library.
This bracket system tournament would result in one winner who would claim $20 bucks worth of snacks and drinks!
The first match took place between Palmer and Wolfley!
Palmer has played chess before but still has a lot to learn while Wolfley is a confident player who knows what he’s doing. During the match Palmer began to make mistakes and Wolfley took every chance he got to play aggressive at every opportunity; however, his aggressive style began to produce mistakes and missed openings that prevented an early win. Eventually Wolfley backed Palmer’s king into a corner but even with nearly ever piece gone, Palmer was still able to draw his opponent into a stalemate! But with the points tallied up, Wolfley won and moved forward in the bracket!
The second match too place between Hepworth and Mavy!
Both these players possess equal chess knowledge but are separated by their styles of play. Hepworth plays with a ruthless and aggressive style but mostly avoids leaving himself open to counters. Mavy plays more defensively player and uses the others player’s moves against them. During the match, the battlefield was equal with both players taking pieces from one another. Eventually, Hepworth’s aggressive moves started to break down Mavy’s defense, and with one last sneaky move Hepworth put his opponent into checkmate moved on to face Wolfley in the final round
Wolfley vs Hepworth!
The final battle for the winning prize featured two knowledgeable players dueling it out. And how did it go? Rather anticlimactically. After a subtle move from Hepworth early into the game, he put Wolfley into checkmate from a hidden spot, making Hepworth the undisputed chess champ at SVHS. Think you can take him? Go ahead and make the challenge and get your flowers.
With Hepworth’s final victory he decided to turn his $20 bucks into school pink sugar cookies!
