The parking lot. Most students begin and end their day there. Usually easy to get into and slow to get out of, how safe is this place for the students and teachers who use it, and what can be done to make it safer and better for everyone?
Junior Carter Gaughan said, “I have no problem parking in the morning, but in the afternoon it is too busy and hard to leave the parking lot.” There doesn’t seem to be much to be done about that, other than drivers being patient and kind towards each other, something that also goes a long way towards safety.
Probably no one worries more about the safety of our parking more than student resource officer Correy Bassett. He said, “It really all depends on what you consider safe. Driving around here? Could be better. Too much happens. Speeding, kids skipping. On a scale 1-10, about a 6 on safety.” So how can students raise Bassett’s safety rating?
Assistant Principal Josh Frazier has to deal with many of the trouble students get up to in the parking lot. He said, “I guess there are 2 things that can be done. One, we can send out a video on how to park. What to do and what not to do and create a punishment for those who don’t follow. We also need is more police presence.”
Both men emphasized that consideration for other drivers and careful driving in the lot would solve most of the problems.
