Abi Carillo-Zarate made headlines on March 12, 2026, when she officially committed to Rome City Institute in Italy to continue her track and field career as a thrower. The announcement, held in the high school commons, marks a major step in her athletic journey, giving her the chance to compete internationally while pursuing her education.
Abi’s path to this opportunity started with an unexpected email from Rome City Institute. Using the recruitment website NCSA, she often received messages from college coaches, but the email from Rome City caught her attention immediately. The school described its growing program and invited athletes to apply. Although she initially doubted her chances, she was thrilled when she got the official acceptance.
Her decision to commit wasn’t just about competing—it was also about experiencing life in a new country. “I’m excited to explore a new culture, learn Italian, and face the challenge of competing against other Italian teams,” she said. Beyond athletics, she sees this commitment as a chance to grow personally and academically, embracing both competition and learning a new language.
Abi credits her high school track experience for preparing her mentally for this next step. She explained that in her early years she often felt nervous before meets, but a piece of advice from Coach Ty Draney—“pressure is a privilege”—helped her turn anxiety into motivation. That mindset shift allowed her to approach competitions with excitement and calm, seeing challenges as lessons rather than stress.
Throwing coach McKay Young also spoke about Abi’s growth and what sets her apart. “Abi has always been a very gifted and talented thrower, but what has set her apart is the passion and work she has put in,” he said. “She has invested countless hours of her own time both during the season and during the off season to improve her craft. She is where she is because of the work she personally put in.”
Young added that it has been rewarding to watch her develop over time. “It’s been fun to watch her do so well over the years and now be rewarded for her efforts.” He also shared his excitement for what’s ahead, especially with an upcoming trip. “I’m especially excited to see her have this opportunity because Abi and I are going to Rome with the Europe group next week. It will be fun to scout it out with her and see what will be her home for a few years as she competes at the next level.”
He also highlighted the impact Abi has had on the team. “I think she’s been an incredible mentor to the younger throwers. She has been the best thrower we’ve had as far as creating team unity and family. She created Throw Nation!”
Head coach Ty Draney also praised Abi’s leadership and highlighted the significance of her commitment. “Abi has been dedicated to her craft. She has been a great leader for our throws group.” He pointed out how rare and special this opportunity is. “This is the first signing we’ve had for a school in Europe. Only about 7% of HS athletes get a chance to compete in college. We are proud of Abi and are excited to see her shine in Italy.”
Her teammates have really noticed how dedicated Abi is and how much she lifts the team. Elizabeth Fluckiger, a throwing teammate, said, “Abi is such a supportive teammate. She always has an energetic attitude that lifts everyone up and makes us believe we can
achieve more. She pushes us to work harder and reach our full potential.”
Fluckiger explained that Abi leads by example every day. Whether it’s staying late to practice, focusing on her technique, or cheering on teammates during tough meets, Abi’s commitment is clear. “I was so excited for Abi when she earned this opportunity to go to school in Rome,” Fluckiger said. “She’s consistent in striving to improve, pushes herself to her limits, and has broken both school records and her own personal records. She’s earned every bit of this chance.” Fluckiger added, “She makes you want to try harder and not give up, even when things get tough. She’s the kind of teammate who makes the whole team better, just by being herself.”
These comments show why Abi’s commitment matters. She’s not only worked hard for herself but has inspired her teammates and made a lasting impact on the program. Her achievement is a reminder that dedication, teamwork, and a positive attitude can open doors to amazing opportunities—even ones that take you all the way to another country.
Abi’s commitment reflects more than athletic talent; it highlights perseverance, leadership, and the willingness to take on new challenges. As she prepares to compete and study in Rome, she leaves behind a lasting impact on her team and sets an inspiring example for future athletes.
