Athletes from across Wyoming gathered in Gillette on March 6–7 for the Wyoming State Indoor Track Meet, where competitors raced, jumped, and pushed themselves against some of the best talent in the state. Among those competing were Samuel Gaskell, Dax Button, Morgan King, and Jonah McClure, who each had different events and experiences at the meet.
For Gaskell, the meet brought strong results in the jumping events. Gaskell recorded a 20’3″ long jump and a 6’2″ high jump, earning a placement in high jump and a personal record in long jump.

“I got a 20’3 on long and 6’2 on high jump. I’m pretty happy with these results because I placed in high jump and I got a PR in long jump,” Gaskell said.
Beyond the results, Gaskell enjoyed the environment of competing at the indoor facility.
“It was a cool atmosphere, I love the Gillette indoor facility,” he said. His favorite part of the weekend was simple: “I got to be with my friends.”
Sprinter Morgan King competed in several events, including the medley relay, 4×200 relay, and the open 200 meter dash.

“Medley—placed 6th. My split time was 27.83 and our whole relay time was 4 minutes and 33 seconds. I was super happy with this. Me and the rest of the girls all pushed ourselves super hard and it was fun,” King said.
She finished 11th in the 4×200 relay with a 28-second split, though she admitted she hoped to perform better. In the 200 meter dash, King ran a 29.46, a result she said she wasn’t satisfied with.
Despite the ups and downs, King said the meet helped build friendships with teammates.
“I really love getting to know new people that I’m not super close with,” she said. “A lot of my closest friendships have come from track.”
King also admitted feeling nervous before her race.
“I was feeling super nervous and scared mostly on my open 200 because I was by myself and it’s my favorite event,” she said
Sprinter Dax Button competed in the 55 meter dash, running a 6.7 second time.

“I ran the 55m dash and ran a 6.7. I felt ok about it,” Button said.
Button also enjoyed the experience of competing in the facility.
“The atmosphere was really cool. It was a nice facility. It was really fun to compete there,” he said.
For Button, some of the best memories came outside of competition.
“We ate at a good place so that was fun, and going to Walmart and getting And1 shorts was fun,” he said.
Meanwhile, Jonah McClure competed in several jumping events, recording a 5’8″ high jump and a 20’3″ long jump. However, McClure said the meet didn’t quite go how he hoped.

“I do not really feel satisfied with my results because I was jumping far behind the board in long jump and I jumped way below my PR in high jump,” McClure said.
Despite the results, McClure said he felt confident heading into the meet.
“I was feeling very prepared and confident in my abilities going into it, but it didn’t end up going how I hoped, but that’s okay,” he said.
One of his favorite moments of the weekend came while competing in the 4×200 relay, which felt more like a team effort. He also enjoyed spending time with teammates at the hotel.
“We had some really funny times together,” McClure said.
While the meet brought different results for each athlete, the experience of competing at the state level and spending time with teammates made the weekend memorable.
