As spring arrives, the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams launch into a brand-new season filled with anticipation, fresh talent, and a determination to bounce back from last year’s challenging seasons. The boys finished the 2025 season 3–11–1, while the girls concluded at 0–15, and both programs are entering this year focused on rebuilding, improving, and setting a stronger tone from day one. Tryouts ran from March 9–11 on the SVHS soccer fields, bringing together returning athletes, new faces, and coaches ready to build something special. The turnout this year was notably higher than in previous seasons, giving coaches more depth across multiple positions. Many players also spent time preparing during the offseason, helping raise the competitive level from the start.
Girls’ head coach Jessica Bagley says she’s excited about the culture her team is already forming. “I am most looking forward to the team culture we are going to build,” she explained. She added that the team’s main priority is unity: “Our focus is to have a unified team and to push ourselves to meet our team goals.” This season brings a mix of experienced players and new additions, creating a fresh environment for development. The coaching staff is also introducing updated training routines aimed at improving consistency throughout the season.
On the boys’ side, head coach Trevor Spencer sees promise in the group competing for spots this year. “I see a lot of potential in this year’s team. We have some great returning players and good additions, so I am excited to see where we go,” Spencer shared. His focus remains steady and simple: “We are going to focus on getting better every day.” The boys have shown strong early energy during warm-ups and scrimmages, giving the team a solid starting point. Coaches have also noticed improvements in communication and teamwork compared to last year.

For the seniors, this season carries extra meaning. Girls’ senior Hazel Ross reflected on her final year with appreciation and drive. “I am most excited to give it my all and hopefully win a few games… making good and lasting memories for my last season!” she said. This year marks a chance for seniors to guide younger athletes who are just entering the program. Many of the upperclassmen are stepping naturally into leadership roles as practices progress.
Boys’ senior Max Matijczyk echoed that emotion, emphasizing both team goals and personal growth. “I am most excited for the chance to go to state soccer this year… I am also excited to put myself out there more for college and semi-professional soccer,” he said. He added that SVHS soccer shaped his high-school experience: “These past four years at SVHS have been wonderful, and my coaches are the ones who got me through high school wanting to play soccer every day.” This season also allows seniors to set the tone for how the team handles practices, games, and challenges. With a stronger foundation in place, the program hopes to build lasting momentum for future teams.
This year’s roster will also welcome a new class of freshmen stepping onto the field for the first time. Their enthusiasm brings a fresh spark to both programs as they begin adjusting to the pace and expectations of high school soccer. Freshman Sadie Sloan shared her excitement, saying, “I’m really excited for the season and just getting to know the girls and becoming a family. I’m also looking forward to learning from the older players, especially how they stay confident and lead.”
On the boys’ side, freshman Derek Crowther expressed what he’s most eager for this season. “This soccer season I’m most looking forward to swimming and learning how it is to be with a team of friends. I hope to learn leadership skills and how to be a good person like Chase [Junior soccer player].” Their enthusiasm highlights the optimism and energy the freshman class brings into both programs.
As the season begins, the soccer teams look ahead with renewed determination and a stronger sense of purpose. With returning leaders, dedicated coaches, and committed newcomers all working toward the same goals, the program hopes to build lasting momentum. Whether on the practice field or under the lights on game day, the teams are focused on growth, teamwork, and representing SVHS with pride throughout the season.
