The drama department is at the end of preparing for the annual spring musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. They will preform March 19th-21st in the SVHS auditorium. After months of rehearsals, the cast and crew are now entering the final stages of preparation as opening night approaches.
The musical brings together a large group of students, including actors, stage crew, and tech staff, who have all put in hours of work behind the scenes to bring the show to life. According to senior cast member Ainsley Bowman, the cast is currently focused on polishing the performance.
“Right now we are at the stage where we are just running the show,” Bowman said. “We are really polishing, so there are times where we will do a scene multiple times. We are starting to incorporate our props and set and are really starting to see it come together.”
The week before showtime will be the highly anticipated “tech week,” when lighting, microphones, and other elements are incorporated into the production practices.
“Tech week is when we start using mics and lights,” Bowman explained. “We will run the whole show each day and we usually don’t leave till around 8. It’s the craziest week but I feel it really bonds the cast.”
Director Tami Nielsen said this musical is designed to showcase as many students as possible and provide an entertaining experience for the community.
“It’s just a non-stop fun time,” Nielsen said. “It’s also a chance to feature a lot of people. I’m most excited about the amount of kids we have on stage and the set and costumes that give each kid a chance to be seen and featured.”
Behind the scenes, the technical crew is also working hard to prepare for the production. Stage manager Kassy Taylor said one of the biggest challenges has been organizing the microphones and lighting.
“Our main focus right now is to get the lighting figured out and figure out the mics because there are a lot of switching mics between people this year,” Taylor said.
Despite the long rehearsals, students say the process has been rewarding. Junior actor Abby England said she is excited for audiences to see some of the show’s standout musical numbers, including “Benjamin Calypso.”
The cast and crew encourage the student body and the community to attend and support their hard work and talent when they perform next week. Hope to see you there!
