Wide receiver Cooper Lancaster said Hovey’s dedication and passion for the game set him apart.
“I really think it goes to show how much of a leader he is and all of the work that he has put in to get to the spot that he is today,” Lancaster said. “I remember watching Phoenixx go to camp after camp during the summers to improve his skill. As one of his receivers I got to see his leadership and passion for the game in the way that he competed every day in practice and in games. I think he will have lots of success at the next level.”
Head coach McKay Young praised Hovey’s confidence and performance in critical moments.
“Phoenixx is the most confident kid I believe I’ve ever coached,” Young said. “I was super proud of the way he led this team. He played incredible in Laramie, willing our team to a state championship with his legs and arm.
“I look forward to watching how far he can go in football. He has bet on himself time and time again, and I see that leading to sustained success for him. I believe in Phoenixx Hovey.”
Hovey said he is looking forward to the opportunities that await him at the collegiate level while also reflecting on what the moment means to his family.
“My parents are super proud and happy too but also sad to see me leave. I am just excited to grow into my adult life and do good things.”
Family, friends, teammates, and coaches gathered earlier this week for a signing ceremony to celebrate Hovey’s achievement and the next step in his football journey.
Rocky Mountain College competes in the NAIA and is known for developing student-athletes both academically and athletically. Hovey is expected to join the Battlin’ Bears this summer in preparation for fall training camp.
As he prepares to leave Star Valley, Hovey does so with a legacy of leadership, determination, and belief in himself — qualities that have defined his high school career and are expected to serve him well at the next level.
