The Speech and Debate team hosted its first home tournament of the season on January 16, welcoming competitors from schools across the region. The event marked an important milestone for the team, giving students the opportunity to compete, volunteer, and help run a large-scale academic competition on their own campus.
The tournament filled classrooms and hallways throughout the school as rounds took place simultaneously in multiple locations. Students, judges, and coaches moved between rooms all day, creating a fast-paced and energetic atmosphere. “It was a wild and fun experience,” said Abigail England. “Though we had one or two complications, it was amazing and went super well.” Despite minor challenges, the tournament stayed on track thanks to teamwork and preparation.
In addition to competing, many Speech and Debate members helped manage the event. Students assisted judges, directed competitors, unlocked rooms, and answered questions throughout the day. “Our home tournament went really well. It was a very memorable tournament for sure,” said Josey O’Donnell. “Cooper Daniel and I spent most of our time running around the school helping people find their rooms or unlocking doors.” Their efforts played a key role in keeping the tournament organized and welcoming.
Along with competition rounds, the team hosted fundraisers during the tournament. Students sold items such as slime and snacks, helping raise money to support the Speech and Debate program and future travel expenses. The fundraiser added to the lively environment and gave visitors something fun to enjoy between rounds.
Hosting a home tournament allowed students to experience Speech and Debate from a new perspective, gaining leadership and organizational skills alongside competition experience. The January 16 tournament proved to be a success and a memorable day for both competitors and volunteers. As the season continues, the team looks forward to applying what they learned from hosting and competing in future tournaments.
