School is usually thought of as a place for learning, tests, and homework, but for many students, it’s also a place where they look for comfort and safety. Not every important moment at school happens inside a classroom. Spaces like the library, rotunda, and cafeteria often become safe spaces where students can relax, feel supported, and get through stressful days.
One of the most important safe spaces for students is the library: A Calm and Supportive Space.

Question asked:“Why does that place matter to you?”
“The staff in the library are kind.” – Kiarra Swenson
For Kiarra, the library is the safest place in the school. She shared that being there makes her feel relaxed during the day. Even though she doesn’t usually go there when she’s stressed, the peaceful environment helps her stay calm. The kindness of the staff plays a big role in why the library feels welcoming. It’s a space without pressure where students can simply exist and feel supported. The library shows how a quiet, supportive space can make a big difference for students.
Another safe space for students is the rotunda and cafeteria , especially when they are with friends.

Question asked: “Where do you feel safest or most comfortable at school?”
“Anywhere with my friends.” – Esme Whicker
Esme explained that she feels safest when she’s around people she cares about, especially in places like the rotunda or cafeteria. These spaces matter to her because they “mean a lot” emotionally and help her feel at peace. Sometimes, when she’s overwhelmed, being there helps her feel better and calm down. These areas may not be quiet, but for students like Esme, a sense of belonging and connection, which can be just as comforting.
Teachers also recognize how these spaces help students.

Question asked:“How does a space support students beyond academics?”
“Well, a student’s mental well-being is directly tied to their academics and life beyond. It’s important for all students to have a space that they feel like they can retreat to without worries. It feels good to be in a space without expectations, assignments, or worries.” – Mr. Burton
Mr. Burton believes students do use places like the library and rotunda as safe spaces. He explained that mental well-being is directly connected to academics and life outside of school. Having a place to retreat without pressure, without expectations, assignments, or stress help students mentally. It’s important, especially in a stressful environment like school. His message about these spaces is simple: “Keep it comfortable. Keep it real.”
Why These Spaces Matter
In the end, school is more than just classrooms and lessons. Safe spaces in school help students feel calmer, happier, and more supported. The library, rotunda, and cafeteria aren’t just parts of the building—they’re places where students can reset and take care of their mental health. These spaces matter because they help students emotionally, which helps them succeed both in school and in life and when schools value these spaces, they show they care about students as people, not just learners.
