Star Valley High School’s Speech and Debate team recognized its graduating seniors during Senior Night on Thursday, January 23. The event honored Cooper Daniel, Marie Bateman, and Alan Ridenour for their dedication, growth, and commitment to the team, giving them a moment in the spotlight similar to traditional athletic senior nights.
For many seniors, Senior Night was a completely new experience. Walking out in front of a crowd, finding escorts, and standing on the floor brought unexpected nerves. “I’ve never done anything like this,” said Ridenour. “It was stressful. I didn’t know who was going where or where some of my escorts were, and I barely knew what to do. I don’t know how athletes stay in front of people for a game—it’s terrifying, especially since I’d never done something like that before.” Despite the nerves, the moment was meaningful for those being honored.
Senior Night highlighted the effort students have put into Speech and Debate over the years. Team members spend countless hours preparing speeches, practicing debates, traveling to tournaments, and supporting one another. The night gave the team and community a chance to recognize that dedication beyond competition results.
Senior Night served as a reminder that Speech and Debate is more than just competition—it’s about growth, courage, and community. As the season continues, underclassmen will carry on the legacy built by the seniors, while those being honored move forward with skills and memories that will last well beyond high school.
