The indoor track team kicked off its season on January 17, 2026, with its first meet at Idaho State University. The meet served as an early-season test for athletes and coaches, giving the team a chance to shake off the rust, set goals, and see how they stack up against competition from around the state.
Many athletes came away encouraged by their performances and focused on what lies ahead. Senior Sullivan Wilson said his goals include making the finals at the Simplot Meet and podiuming at state in both of his events. “I felt pretty good about how I did at the first meet,” Wilson said, noting that the relays stood out as a strong point for the team. Sprinter Jacob Howe shared similar optimism, aiming to run a 7.15 in the 60-meter dash and a 23.35 in the 200 by season’s end. While he wanted a faster 60, Howe was pleased with his 200 and believes the team’s early success will translate to state.
Field athletes also showed promise. Abby Carrillo-Zarate emphasized having fun while pushing for records this season, saying she was proud of her placement and excited by the many personal records achieved by teammates. Jumper Jonah McClure set ambitious goals of clearing 6’6” in the high jump, 22 feet in the long jump, and 45 feet in the triple jump. Though he felt he could improve, McClure said the team had “a pretty good shot at doing well at state.” Mylie Kaiser added that the meet was a strong starting point, especially as athletes prepare for the outdoor season.
Coaches echoed the athletes’ positive outlook. Coach Young highlighted Carrillo-Zarate’s performance, noting she won the weight throw and could break her own school record multiple times this year. Coach Draney described the meet as a “rust buster” and said the team’s goal is to grow more competitive with other 4A schools while building leadership. “The goal is always to go after an indoor team title,” he said.
Coach Balls emphasized development and health as the season progresses, explaining that athletes come in with different goals, from staying in shape to competing for state titles. He praised the jumpers for adapting well to the indoor environment and improving on last year’s marks. With a strong start and clear goals, the indoor track team looks ahead to the rest of the season determined to push themselves and represent their school well at state.
