Student Council Makes December Memorable
This December, the Student Council has gone above and beyond to bring holiday spirit into the school. From decorations to activities, the planning behind the scenes required dedication and teamwork. Brooke Suter explained just how much effort went into it, saying, “Planning all the December activities took a lot of teamwork and communication… everyone pitched in, which made it come together!” She shared how members brainstormed ideas, divided responsibilities, and stayed organized with constant check-ins. Brooke also added that the best part is seeing students enjoy the events and make memories, explaining that the fun energy of December makes all the hard work worth it.
Senior Mary Johnson highlighted how different this year feels compared to the past: “I can honestly say that there has never been a student council so involved as this one.” She noted that all the activities have increased school pride and made the holiday season more exciting for everyone.
Giving Back Through the Class Battle Toy Drive
One of the most impactful events this season is the Class Battle Toy Drive for Shriners Children’s Hospital. Students and community members are encouraged to donate new and unwrapped toys, books, or games. Each class is competing to see who can donate the most, turning generosity into friendly competition.
The Student Council hoped this drive would help students think beyond themselves during the busy holiday season and make a difference in children’s lives. This event shows that the holidays are not only about celebration, but also about kindness, generosity, and helping others in need.
Spread the Joy & Find Jingle
Holiday cheer has also been spreading through fun daily activities. Spread the Joy Candy Grams are available for $1 during lunch from December 15–19, allowing students to surprise friends or someone special with a sweet treat—delivered the same day.
Another favorite activity is Find Jingle the Elf. Each day, Jingle hides somewhere new around the school. Students who find him take a picture and show it to the office to receive a treat and earn a raffle ticket. Gina Fullmer shared her excitement, saying, “It is fun to see the kids trying to find it… it’s a nice diversion for the day, like something to do other than math and science.” She also mentioned how fun it is seeing students team up to search for Jingle together.
Deck the Halls Class Battle
The Deck the Halls Class Competition began on December 8 and had to be completed by December 12. Each grade was assigned a festive theme:
Seniors: Social Studies Hall – Whoville
Juniors: English Hall – Santa’s Workshop
Sophomores: Math Hall – Gingerbread
Freshmen: Science Hall – Winter Wonderland
Students spent hours decorating their halls, with some staying late into the night. Student Council President Janey Young shared, “We haven’t really done a lot to celebrate Christmas in the past few years so it is something that we wanted to change.” She explained how grateful she was for the underclassmen who helped bring big ideas to life and hyped up participation. Janey also mentioned how special it was to see students working late and even bringing in real trees to make the halls look amazing. Janey Young announced the Sophomores as the winners of this competition at the State Drama assembly on Monday, December 15.
Tommy Beck praised the results, saying, “Absolutely terrific… the different colored lights and stuff like that is absolutely terrific.” The winning class will enjoy donuts and hot chocolate as their reward.
Holiday Fun Brings School Together
To finish off the holiday celebrations, students will enjoy a Christmas movie during lunch, featuring The Grinch. Teacher Tyson Balls shared his excitement, saying, “Lots of planning by the kiddos… I am most excited for the movie, and donuts and hot chocolate.” He added that the entire week of activities has made the school feel more connected and festive.
Student Tayt Lawson also recognized the leadership behind the events, saying, “It’s all the planning that Janey does to make school more fun… she always knows what she wants to do for the school to make it more enjoyable for everyone.”
Overall, the Student Council has successfully brought Christmas spirit back to the high school, creating fun, memories, and a strong sense of school pride that will be remembered long after the decorations come down.
