The Star Valley Braves varsity basketball team opened its season in dominant fashion on December 11th, cruising to a 62–32 victory over Coeur d’Alene High School at the Mountain America Center during the Title One Tip-Off Classic.
Under the leadership of Coach Shumway and Coach Lancaster, the Braves came out sharp and composed, setting the tone early against one of the tougher programs they will face this season. Star Valley’s game plan was clear from the start: play disciplined defense, push the tempo, and make a statement in game one.
That preparation showed on the court. Senior Dylan Shumway credited the team’s daily work for their strong performance. “I would say just preparing every day in practice, like getting shots up or running scout team of our next opponent,” Shumway said.
Senior Cooper Lancaster led the way offensively, pouring in 27 points to guide the Braves to victory. He was supported by a strong senior core that included Lincoln Liddiard, Zack Thompson, Will Linford, Tayt Lawson, and Mason Kleeman, who helped build a commanding lead through the first three quarters.
Reflecting on the season opener, Lancaster was pleased with the team’s execution on both ends of the floor. “I would say it went really well for our first game,” Lancaster said. “We were able to move the ball well and start on the defensive end. We got out in transition and finished our shots, so I think there is a lot to build upon, but it was a good start.”

That early dominance allowed the Braves’ younger players to gain valuable experience in the fourth quarter. Juniors CJ Neuenschwander, Beckham Brog, and Gabe Delgado, along with sophomore Crew Lancaster, saw extended playing time and continued the team’s high level of intensity.
Star Valley’s defense was a highlight of the game, especially against Coeur d’Alene’s Division I commit Caden Symons. The Braves held the talented scorer to just nine points, showcasing their ability to lock in defensively and execute the scouting report.
The Braves were without Zach Delgado and Roman Erickson, both sidelined due to injury, but the team’s depth and chemistry were evident throughout the contest.
The decision to open the season against a strong opponent like Coeur d’Alene was intentional. Star Valley wanted an early test to prepare for the challenges ahead, and the Braves passed that test convincingly. With a 62–32 win to start the year, Star Valley set the tone for what promises to be an exciting and competitive season.
