The Star Valley High School Speech and Debate team kicked off its season last weekend with an online tournament, which took place December 11-12. This marked the start of a season that runs from November through mid-March, during which students prepare to showcase their skills in tournaments across Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah.
As an active member of the Wind River District of the National Speech and Debate Association, Star Valley’s team focuses on helping students develop critical thinking, public speaking, and performance skills. “Anyone can participate in Speech and Debate and benefit from these lifelong skills,” said team coaches, emphasizing that the program is open to all students interested in improving their communication abilities.
Preparation for tournaments is rigorous. Students practice by delivering speeches in front of peers or a wall, perfecting timing, gestures, and delivery. Debaters plan for possible questions and rehearse comebacks. Mock events are also common, simulating a tournament environment without judges to build confidence.
Junior team captain Bailey Sperry shared the excitement and nerves that come with competing: “It’s nerve-wracking in the sense that there are new people and a new concept you’re talking about. For novices, it’s even scarier because they are extremely new to this kind of environment.”
Meanwhile, Senior captain Marie Bateman said, “With our first tournament coming up, I feel more excited than anything. I’ve done speech all through high school, so I rarely feel nervous anymore. I love performing and showing off my work, so it’s really exhilarating for me.”
As the team headed into their first online tournament of the season, preparation and practice were key. Whether through speeches or debates, Star Valley students were ready to put their skills to the test and represent their school in competitions throughout the region. The dedication of the team ensures that, regardless of experience level, every student has a chance to grow and succeed.
