On November 3rd and 4th, several high school students attended the annual Model United Nations (MUN) conference at Jackson Hole High School. The event brought together students from across the region to discuss global issues and practice the art of diplomacy.
The students who participated were Sydney Saltzman, Trace Hillstead-Clauson, Hailee Myers, Abbygail Sanderson, Chase Tyler, Emma Moreton, Kate Ricks, and Sara Sanderson. Each student represented a different country in simulated United Nations committees, debating and drafting resolutions on pressing international topics. The conference provided an opportunity to improve public speaking, negotiation, and leadership skills.
“Model UN is interesting because you get to act in the interest of your country, so you’re not necessarily going off of your own beliefs but instead seeing things from someone else’s perspective,” said Saltzman.

Notably, Sydney Saltzman and Abbygail Sanderson were both recognized for their excellence in writing and research, earning Best Position Paper awards from their committee chairs. Their success highlighted the team’s dedication and understanding of global affairs.
Emma Moreton added, “My favorite part was experiencing an understanding of how people in my generation debate and how important it is to be true to my own opinion in debate.”
Chase Tyler reflected, “MUN, overall, pushed my brain to another level and increased my critical thinking and public speaking skills. If I had learned about MUN earlier, I would have joined earlier and honestly I am looking forward to it next year.”
The students returned from Jackson Hole with new insights into international relations and the power of diplomacy. Their experiences and achievements at MUN not only strengthened their academic skills but also inspired them to continue engaging in global discussions in the years to come.
