On September 15, many students took the day to head into the mountains for hunting season. Even football practice was canceled so student-athletes could have the chance to participate. Unlike in some surrounding states where hunters must draw a tag, Wyoming allows hunters to purchase a general deer tag over the counter. The state is especially known for its large mule deer, particularly in the western and central regions. Thanks to healthy habitat, careful tag management, and relatively low hunting pressure, deer in Wyoming are able to reach impressive size and age. Each year, hunters from all over travel to the state for the chance to pursue one of these trophy-class animals, and teens are foremost amongst them!
Reggie England poses with his trophy deer. This was Reggie's first buck. He said, "I really didn't have to work too hard; he came right up close to my tent, and that is where I killed him."
