As soon as the snow melts, golfers—mostly high school students—can be seen out on the course, taking advantage of the first few free days. This annual tradition returned again this year, with spring golfers eager to be outside practicing and honing their skills. Spring tournaments, which serve as warm-ups for the more competitive summer season, are quickly approaching.
Currently, many players are practicing on the course every day after school in preparation for the upcoming competitions. Team meetings were held in Coach Fullmer’s classroom on April 8th, 9th, and 10th, where players discussed key strategies such as the mental game, course management, and effective practice habits.
Not all students are able to participate in spring golf, as some are committed to other spring sports like soccer or track. Freshman Vinny Roniger was on the fall golf team but plays soccer in the spring. He shared his thoughts:
“I’m feeling a bit down. Golf is my absolute favorite sport, but I also love soccer. So, I decided to go with soccer for this season. It would be awesome if I had more free time after school so I could practice golf more.”
Coach Kelly Fullmer emphasized the unpredictable nature of spring weather and its impact on the sport:
“Weather always makes spring golf tough, but we play when and where we can. The chance to officially compete, even in our informal spring tournaments, is a valuable way to shake off the winter rust and gear up for the summer and fall golf season. This year, due to cancellations, we’ll only play in three tournaments instead of our usual four.”
The team’s first tournament took place on April 25th in Pinedale.
“Five teams were in attendance,” said Coach Fullmer. “Our boys team won the tournament, with our own Aiden DeCora taking first place in the boys individual competition.”
As the spring season continues, the team remains focused and optimistic, despite the challenges brought on by Wyoming’s unpredictable weather. With summer on the horizon, the players are hopeful that their dedication now will pay off in the competitive months to come.
