From February 28 to March 2, the speech and debate team traveled to Riverton to compete at regionals, their final tournament before the state competition.
Speech and debate offer students the opportunity to compete in a variety of events, allowing them to explore different skills while striving to surpass their previous performances and achieve personal goals.
Sophomore Brooklyn Bach competed in Lincoln-Douglas debate on Friday and Saturday, finishing with two wins and two losses. Reflecting on her experience, she said, “Regionals is always an interesting tournament because of the ‘sacrificial lambs’—people who enter random events to increase the number of national qualifiers—but it was fun to debate some great competitors, and I did my best.”
Senior Kennadee Wheeler also participated in the tournament, competing in Dramatic Interpretation. Although she didn’t advance to finals, she was pleased with her performance. “The tournament was super fun, and even though I didn’t do amazing, I feel happy with how I did and am super excited to go to state this weekend,” said Wheeler.
During the tournament, senior Fennec Burton qualified for nationals in Congressional Debate and earned a spot as the third alternate in Drama. Wheeler praised her performance, saying, “Fennec did an amazing job, and with all those skills, it’s no wonder she’s an alternate for Drama and heading to nationals for Congress.”
Although the team did not place overall at the tournament, every participant was proud of their achievements and enjoyed the experience.
