In Star Valley, we endure some bad winter storms; however, everyone goes to school and work like normal. But on some days we shouldn’t have to.
When temperatures are -40 or we get two feet of snow over night, it’s not very practical to be leaving for school at 7am. When busses break down, get stuck, or kids can’t get out of their driveways, it becomes very easy to be late to school, or even miss it, not to mention the amount of crashes that happen delaying traffic. “The traffic in the morning really bothers me and impacts my whole day. The drive from Alpine to Afton is already hard enough, but then the road conditions are rough, it can take forever to get to school- that’s if we can even make it that far,” explained junior Anna Olofson.
Many students have have brought their concerns to parents, teachers, and administration, but no change have been made. Many people would be okay with a late start on bad mornings. This would allow student to take their time getting to school on clearer road and in the daylight. But sometimes it’s not just getting to school, it’s coming home.
Getting home 30 minutes later then normal because of low visibility can cause concern for families and students. Students with after school activities are also heavily impacted. Getting home not only in the dark, but in a snow storm, can be extremely dangerous for new drivers.
Sometimes it’s so bad they recommend we shouldn’t go to lunch because the conditions outside are so bad. If they’re that bad, should we even be at school? Not only that, but school is over a 40 minute drive for some students in good conditions, so in a snow storm or on icy roads it can take over an hour to get home.
If getting to and coming home from school looks dangerous, I think that admin should be more open to the idea of a day off, or at the least, a delayed start.
