During summer some major renovations took place at Braves Field. The bleachers were replaced; the main field got new turf, and another turf field was added west of the grandstands.
People driving by in July may wondered could be the reason for the project? How much did this all cost? Athletic Director Rob Erickson has these answers.
How much money was likely the first question many people thought of when seeing the construction. “The cost of the second turf field was $750,000. The district used depreciation reserve money, which is solely intended for the improvement of facilities,” said Erickson.
Although the second field was not cheap, it was needed. Erikson said, “The district has wanted to do this for 10+ years.” Erickson explained that multiple groups needed the main turf field at the same time and maintaining the grass field was a challenge due to maintenance such as damage caused by blowing off the slow-melting snow from the natural surface.
One thing for sure, the new field will get used. “Many groups have the opportunity to use and enjoy the new field. We now have PE classes that use both fields as well as club soccer, city league soccer. Freshman football now has a place to practice,” said Erickson.
The artificial turf also provides a safer surface to compete, play, and practice on. Erickson said, “It’s a much better surface that is going to help prevent sprained ankles due to potholes.” While groups used to take turns using the main field, they now have their own safe, smooth, artificial surface. “They used to have the other class either be on the grass or in the gym,” said Erickson.
Local company Avail Construction built the field.
