The Braves golf team came out on top at a two-day high school golf tournament held August 17–18 at Star Valley Golf Course. Teams from Star Valley, Jackson, Evanston, Lyman, Kemmerer, Rock Springs and Green River competed throughout the tournament.
Star Valley had the strongest overall team performance, earning the tournament victory on its home course. Star Valley also had three golfers finish among the top three individually. Deegan Hill won the individual competition, while Trevon Benson of Kemmerer finished second and Star Valley’s Daltyn Decora placed third.
The tournament brought changing weather conditions throughout the two days. The first day was sunny with some clouds, providing favorable conditions for the golfers. On the second day, the weather became overcast and rainy. Lightning was also seen in the area, but it remained far enough away that the tournament was able to continue.
For Star Valley’s golfers, playing on their home course provided an opportunity to compete in familiar surroundings while facing teams from across the area.
Decora, who finished third individually, showed the competitive mindset that helped him finish near the top of the tournament. At one point during his round, he joked, “Can I hit one good iron shot?”
Avery Rivard, another Star Valley golfer, said the greens presented a challenge because of their speed.
“The greens were so fast, I had to hit my putts with the shadow of my putter,” Rivard said.
With Hill winning the individual competition and Decora finishing third, Star Valley’s strong individual performances helped lead the team to victory.
The tournament gave the participating teams another opportunity to compete during the high school golf season while preparing for the rest of the season’s competitions.
