Recently the speech and debate team completed their regular season, and qualified Ashely Helm, Gabe Daniels, and Priscilla Greenwell for the national tournament on June 13th.

In a unique season, the team competed for the first time from home over Zoom. “Speech over Zoom was super weird. We are so used to seeing our competitors in person between rounds and talking with them. It was a totally different format because you had to worry about the angle that you were filming at,” said Greenwell.

Speech and Debate may sound like a club for those who like to argue, but Helm explained that they compete as a team following complicated procedures and rules. “I have an actual book of all the rules you have to follow,” said Helm. Helm qualified for nationals in congressional speaking where she must be able to speak  on many different subjects.

Helm has also had the chance to “chair.” Chairing is where the debater runs the chamber for 90 minutes, calls on people, times them, and makes sure everyone gets a chance to speak.

Daniel is most excited to see what types of competition he will face from other locations. “My piece is called Shrinkage’, and it is about a crazy sadistic psychologist that evaluates a perspective employee and carefully backs them into uncomfortable mental places,” said Daniel.

All the national qualifiers hope that they do well in nationals and are preparing hard for it.
