In  the valley students always  debate what  to do with the weekend. Not having many recreational opportunities beyond the normal Saturday night bowling or movie, students face limited options when it comes to doing something with their friends.

When all else fails, there’s always hunting but not just the average deer or elk hunt. Duck hunting always makes for a fun activity in the outdoors.

The best ways to kill a duck vary from decoying them in a blind and calling them in to sneaking up on them and unloading  your shells at them when they scatter as fast as you can.

“I really like to decoy better Saturday morning. I can wake up around six and go get in my blind, throw some decoys out in the water, and just call for them and wait. It’s really nice to sit out by the water, especially after playing a rough game that Friday night,” said junior Phoenix Merritt.

“I have never been duck hunting until this year. I had a few friends convince me to go buy a license and come with them one morning. It’s been a blast talking and laughing and shooting stuff. It doesn’t get any better,” said junior Gabe Nield.

CHILL TIME: A view from the blind is a nice way to watch the sun rise and and then start the morning hunting!

Many kids in the valley duck hunt and all seem to enjoy hiking around a river and waiting for something to fly up. Duck hunting season remains open for several months while deer and elk close after a relatively short time. Duck hunters also have the chance to shoot more than just one.

On the down side, most duck hunters report that the birds aren’t very good to eat, so they just make the meat into jerky.

The next time you can’t think of anything to do on a weekend, get some buddies and go duck hunting!
