Local Star Valley High School students participated and enjoyed their time on the hill at Grover Park during the annual Afton Hillclimb. Every year people from all over come to participate in the event. This event lasts three days; Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It was a weekend full of fun complete with places available to eat and a shuttle to bring fans to the base of the hill. Spectators had to dress warmly as they braved snowing cold to watch the action.

High School Competitors

Junior Cole Thomas #401

How is it racing in front of the home crowd? “The crowd makes me pretty nervous.”

How hard was the hill this year? “The hill was extremely technical and wicked.”

What places did you get? “I got 4th, 5th and 2nd in the Snowbike.”

Sophomore Tanner Thomas #120

How is it racing in front of the home crowd? “I like racing in front of people I know and that know me because I like to show them what I got.”

How hard was the hill this year? “The hill was pretty easy this year.”

What places did you get? “I qualified in four out of four of my races, but I broke my sled, so I couldn’t race the rest of the weekend.”

Did you enjoy watching the hill climbs? Would you go again? “I loved watching the hillclimbs. I want to go every year now.”

What was your favorite part? “My favorite part was the crashes and the yummy food. They had deep fried Oreos and those are the best.”

Would you take friends to them? “I would take my friends there; it’s a good way to spend your day.”

Did you enjoy the hill climbs? Would you go again? “Yes, I love watching them. I go every year.”

What was your favorite part? “My favorite part is watching my boy Cole Thom out there on the hill.” 

Would you take a friend to them? “Yes, I would. They’re pretty fun.” 

Mark your calendars for next year’s hillclimb and come out to support the hometown racers.

LOOKING UP: Looking from the other side of the hill you can see how intense the course is. Addie Butler said, “I loved being up on the hill. It was so awesome except I was scared I was going to get run over the whole time.”

ON TOP: The view from the top of the the hill shows the many snowmobiling trailers and just how big of an event it is. Branden McDonald said, “The best part of the hillclimbs is being up on the hill and watching the racers up close.”
