What’s better than free money?

The boys soccer team at Star Valley High School has received a big boost thanks to a $1,000 Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant from California Casualty. The funds will allow the coach to purchase new warmups to help keep players more comfortable in inclement weather. Coach Shane Hokum said that he wants to provide a quality program for his student-athletes.

The check was presented to Hokum and the boys’ soccer team in the library on Thursday, May 17, in front of a crowd of teachers who showed up for the event. Hundreds of schools applied for this grant, and only those that convinced the committee of their genuine need got it.

Athletic Director Robert Erickson said, “The coaches get to spend the grant money on whatever they want. They intend to use the money to buy cold weather gear so the soccer players don’t freeze during the extra snowy and cold days, or that’s what they told me at least. With things like uniforms or cold weather gear, the school can only provide those things every 6 years, and right now they have none (cold weather gear). In all honesty, cold weather gear is not a necessity  but it is nice to have. The grant money provides more money to purchase wants.”

What do you intend to use the grant money for? What need did you describe to win this grant?

Coach Kurt-Mason:

“We intend to use this grant money in order to buy cold weather gear. We discussed our lovely Wyoming spring weather (make sure you emphasize that the remark was sarcastic) and how we felt the need to outfit our team with gear to match the weather.”

What do you hope the grant money will be used for? What does the soccer program need the most?

Antonio Reyes:

“I hope that we could get some new uniforms. We need more money for trips and traveling.”

Bryson Jenkins:

“I hope that we get some new uniforms. The soccer program needs a better practice field the most.”

Congradulations to the Boys Soccer team for winning this grant and good luck in future games!
