As most people are aware, Super Bowl 52 was held this past weekend. Along with the Super Bowl came HUGE parties with tons of snacks and drinks. At least for some people. While lots of fans stuffed themselves with as many buffalo wings as possible, plenty of people went hungry over Super Bowl weekend.

Freshman Brennan Opitz saw the problem with this and decided to host his very own food drive. He’s accepting canned goods and boxed cereal in his attempt to “tackle hunger” this Super Bowl season. MS talked with Opitz to learn his thinking on this wonderful idea.

Q: So, where did you get the idea to host your own food drive?

A: I decided to do it because my church participates every year, and I told them I could help out at the high school! Also, lots of kids, some kids I know, don’t have enough food and I wanted to help out.

Q: Where will the collected food go?

A: Just to local food banks, but probably the Afton food bank.

Q: When does the food drive end?

A: That’s a really good question. It was supposed to end last Friday, but someone — probably a janitor — took down all the posters, and it’s still going on right now. I’d say probably Tuesday or Wednesday. Yeah, Wednesday the 7th.

Q: Will you do another food drive in the future?

A: Umm, sure. Actually, yes I will.

If you want to help Brennan “tackle hunger,” you can donate canned foods and cereals in the library until February 7th!
