In Utah alone 14 teens have been hospitalized because of one of the newest trends, The Tide Pod challenge. There have even been reports of death from this challenge. Poison control has dealt with more than 50,00 calls that are related to tide pod consumption. This challenge involves a person eating a tide pod and letting their mouth fill with the foam and ooze while they video themselves so they can post it on social media.

When Tide Pods were first released, NFL’s New England Patriots advertised them by ripping the stains out of shirts. Now they are using this NFl team to try and combat this trend. Teens are pretending to consume and even vape tide pods.

Previously, poison control had received calls from parents of children, typically under 5, with a concern because their child had eaten a tide pod because they had mistaken it for candy. P&G, the producers of tide pods, are working to stop this crazy and life threatening trend. This is affecting kids all over the United States. Even in Star Valley. Andrea Hernandez, a worker for Valley Market said, ” I now have to put warning labels on Tide Pods because this trend has become so dangerous.”

If you are wondering if you can eat a tide pod, the answer is clearly no. Be smart and steer clear of this challenge. Here are a few things that some of your fellow teachershad to say on the Tide Pod Challenge.

A: A little bit.

Q: What do you think of this trend?

A: That is the stupidest thing that I have ever heard.

Q: What do you think kids motives are for doing this?

A: They probably wanted attention and did not realize they would end up on national news and that they’d look stupid.

A: Yes

Q: What do you think of this trend?

A: It is obviously dangerous, but I am afraid that people are just going to continually want to one up each other.

Q: Why do think kids motives are for doing this?

A: They just pick something so bizarre that they will stick out.
