The cast of the school musical  kicked off the New Year with play practice everyday after school.  Last year the students of SVHS performed the musical Mary Poppins, and this year they will be performing Fiddler On the Roof.

When asking Director Tara Johnson why she chose The Fiddler on the Roof, she did not really have an answer. She explained that it wasn’t originally even in her top ten picks. The night when she had to make the final decision she went to see Marvin Goldstein in concert and he played a medley from the show, and that when she knew she needed to do this production.

The show will take place March 15-17. The storyline of this play takes place in 1905, and it is about a man named Tevye, his wife, and his daughters. It tells their story as Jews in the Russian tow of Anatevka, and it is about jewish customs and the importance of them. As the world changes, these customs evolve and Tevye struggles letting go of these customs on his journey learning to accept that life changes and that is is okay. Auditions were held just before Christmas break, and results were given the day before as well. Brendan Buehler and Yoli Oussanov were casted as Tevye and Golde, the two leads. Here are a few things some cast members had to say.

Brendan Buehler (Tevye)

What are you looking forward to in the performance?

The friendships.

What helps you to connect to your character?

The gnarly beard.

Daniel Delgado (Mendel)

What are you looking forward to in the performance?

The memories and being able to create something that people will enjoy, especially since it is my last year.

What helps you connect to your character?

As I have read the lines, he (Mendel) is someone who has been raised to be a certain way, and you see a lot of that in the world, and it is fun being the son of the Rabbi because even though I do not have a lot of lines, the Rabbi’s family is very important to the plot of the play.
