You probably already love chocolate, but do you know why you love it?

Chocolate is known as an aphrodisiac because of the compound theobromine, but it is also known to be good for a person because it is made from the tropical Theobroma cacao tree seeds. Over the years chocolate has had bad press because of the fat content. A few interesting facts about chocolate include:

  1. Lowers cholesterol
  2. May prevent memory decline
  3. Consuming chocolate can help reduce the risk of heart disease by one-third.
  4. People that eat chocolate are 22 percent less likely to suffer from a stroke
  5. Regularly consuming chocolate will reduce stroke possibility to 46 percent.

Chocolate has so many properties that can be both good and bad. Of course, consuming too much chocolate can cause a stroke or diabetes. But it can also reduce risk of of heart disease.

Statistics say that from 2013 to the present day, chocolate consumption worldwide has gone up from 6,946 to 7,626 (in 1,000 metric tons). For 2018/19 they predict that the consumption will be raised to 7,696. It is expected to reach 7.7 million tons by 2018/2019.

The Mountain Star interviewed a few students and faculty members to see what they think about chocolate.

What type of chocolate do you think is most popular? What is your favorite type of chocolate? How many chocolate bars do you eat per month?

Senior Anna Finn:

“Milk Chocolate. Dark chocolate. 1/2 a bar per month. I don’t eat much chocolate.”

Junior Taylor Corbin:

“Milk chocolate. Milk chocolate. 1 bar per month.”

Mr. Patterson:

“White chocolate. White chocolate. 5 bars per month.”

Eating chocolate can also release endorphins, so it makes you feel good as well, but be warned: Eat it in moderation this holiday season or you may get too much of a good thing.
